Strikeforce's Miesha Tate Goes Off On Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney
While many seem to be scratching their collective heads as to why Bellator women's champ Zoila Gurgel has been scheduled for the Bellator 78 undercard, former Strikeforce women's bantamweight champ Miesha Tate let her displeasure be heard on Sunday.
"I cannot believe you would allow your champion to be placed on the UN televised undercard in her hometown," Tate tweeted to Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney. "A champion is a champion regardless if she is fighting up a weight, u use her image to promote the posters and then put her on the undercard? Blows my mind."
Tate deleted the tweets minutes later, however, encouraged her followers to rally against Bellator for the "ill treatment of their champ Zoila Gurgel".
Gurgel (11-1), Bellator's 115-pound women's champion, is scheduled to take on Casey Noland (4-2) on Friday's undercard in a non-title bout at the latter's weight of 125-pounds. Gurgel has yet to defend her 115-pound crown since winning it with a split decision over Megumi Fujii in October of 2010.
Bellator 78 takes place at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio, on October 26 and features a pair of welterweight tournament semifinals as Lyman Good meets Michail Tsarev and Andrey Korseshkov takes on Marius Zaromskis. Also on the main card — which airs live on MTV2 — Brian Rogers returns to action against Dominique Steele, while featherweight contender Daniel Straus locks horns with Alvin Robinson.
The night's preliminary card, which features Gorgel vs. Noland second in the lineup, will stream live on Spike.com.
