Chael Sonnen vs. Forrest Griffin Booked For UFC Year-End Show On December 29
Former two-time UFC middleweight title contender Chael Sonnen (27-12-1) will return to the light-heavyweight division this December where he'll meet a foe from his past: Forrest Griffin (19-7).
The bout was announced during Tuesday's edition of "UFC Tonight" on FUEL TV.
The pair will meet on December 29 at the promotion's year-end card — likely to be UFC 155 — at 205-pounds. Though no venue has been formally announced for the Las Vegas card, a heavyweight title rematch between reigning champ Junior dos Santos and former titleholder Cain Velasquez is expected to headline the event.
Sonnen and Griffin first met under the IFC banner in February of 2003 in a match which saw the latter score a submission victory via triangle choke in just over two-minutes. Nearly ten-years later, the pair will finally cross paths again.
Sonnen will look to bounce back from a technical knockout loss to longtime rival Anderson Silva at last month's UFC 148. Prior to the defeat, the 35-year-old notched back-to-back victories over division standouts Brian Stann and Michael Bisping.
Griffin, meanwhile, found success in his most recent outing, earning a unanimous decision over UFC Hall of Famer Tito Ortiz in the co-main event of UFC 148. The bout marked his first since an August of 2011 knockout defeat at the hands of Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.
