After a shuffling of the heavyweight deck this weekend, Cain Velasquez (9-1) will now be facing former Strikeforce standout Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva (16-3) in the co-main event of May's UFC 146.
"Don't believe any of the BS you hear on the internet. Cain is fighting Bigfoot Silva on May 26 in Vegas," UFC president Dana White tweeted on Sunday.
Velasquez was originally scheduled to take on Frank Mir in a number-one contender's match at the May event, however, the bout was scrapped after Mir was called up to the main event spot on Friday. Mir will take on Junior Dos Santos for the heavyweight championship after former contender Alistair Overeem was pulled from the event due to failing a pre-fight drug test.
With Mir out of the co-headliner spot, Velasquez was briefly left without an opponent. Silva, meanwhile, was booked to lock horns with Roy Nelson at UFC 146, though will now take on the former champion Velasquez. The shuffle of matches now leaves Nelson without an opponent for the time being.
Velasquez will look to rebound from the first loss of his career after suffering a first-round knockout at the hands of current champ Dos Santos. Prior to the defeat, the heavy-handed ex-titleholder put together nine-straight victories, including wins over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Brock Lesnar.
Silva will also look to bounce back from a knockout defeat after being put away by undefeated Strikeforce heavyweight Daniel Cormier last September. The loss snapped a three-fight win streak for the Brazilian, who trumped Andrei Arlovski, Mike Kyle and Fedor Emelianenko in succession.
UFC 146 takes place on May 26 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and is headlined by a heavyweight title clash between former champ Frank Mir and recently-crowned titleholder Junior Dos Santos. In the co-main event of the all-heavyweight main card, Cain Velasquez takes on fellow top-ranked heavyweight Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva.
